I made a tool to measure space

I have been finding it hard at work recently. I made a tool to measure space.
It refers to Hall's proximity space: 18" = intimate space, 48" = personal space, 144" = social space, 300" = public space.

When I go back to work on Wednesday I will carry it with me to use when needed. I will write, film and take pictures. I will produce a zine so you can see what happened.

Following on...

Following on from the "some even grew rich..." pieces I have been moving towards making some assemblage work based on the paper installation and collages and some earlier drawings/snapshot photos of physical spaces.  I am still looking at the ground between utopian living and domestic reality- this piece is called "scotoma" a title pinched from the ALISN show at Sluice art fair where the original "some even grew rich and became the object of their neighbours envy" installation was presented.

Some even grew rich and became the object of their neighbours envy

My new work for ALISN presents SCOTOMA at sluice art fait 15th & 16th October 2011.
see www.sluiceartfair.com for more information.

The blind spot occurs when negotiating the ground between utopian fantasy and domestic reality.
The fragile, partial houses and signifiers of a neighbourhood are constructed with a Brechtian philosophy in mind. They show their workings and their flaws reminding the viewer that they are just a suggestion of place and of home.

The interior of the houses are inspired by patterns and furniture from a manual about how “creative people” live and Country Living magazine which works as a consideration of the barrage of information about how to live and what to aspire to.

Homage to home.

Homage to home.
2011

It is a physical manifestation of an imagined space. It has connotations of childhood and alludes to a perceived notion of home as a place of safety. It references Edward T. Hall’s theory of proxemics as a set of rules to define our spaces.

This comes from a wider body work exploring the ideologies connected to how we occupy spaces.

Open studio 2011 selection

a small film about a dash to get to the studio last night to set up a few pieces of work to be considered for the Nunnery exhibition as part of the Bow Arts open 2011...

In memorandum. replica.

This is the start of a new piece of work in the I Am Surrounded By Objects That Define Me body of work.
I am working with items I have been carrying around with me for some time now. There are also objects that I got in exchange for my bric-a-brac lucky dip parcels that I donated to the emely and sprouting 56 "things in a parcel" event at christmas last year and there will be (but not yet) drawings and photos of the items I gave away.

remember- it is a work in progress!

New studio. Hello.

Finally got myself a little better set up and settled in to my new studio space with Bow Arts Trust. The donation of a table from my new studio-neighbour helped greatly!

moving on...

following the work "the study of nests" and a throw back to work i made a few years ago like "fabric sandcastles" and "hiding" (which can be seen on here somewhere) I have been looking at shared spaces and our relationship to them. I have been making some drawings and notes and bits and decided to start to create real/imagined/longed for spaces physically. Here is a first draft:

I am not sure about the over head projector yet... I'm trying out an 8mm film projector so we'll see how that goes.

a little revisit

this is one of my favorite pieces and I feel it has been a little neglected. Probably because it is nearly impossible to take a decent picture of it! oh well, here it is again... it being at the top of my page makes me feel a little better.

I am glad you are happy.
